Srinagar, Apr 02: The J&K government has moved a step forward on the long-pending Machil tunnel project, aimed at improving access to the remote Machil sector.
Replying to a question tabled by MLA Qaysar Jamshaid Lone, the Public Works (R&B) Department said Machil remains cut off during winter due to heavy snowfall, causing serious hardship to residents in this far-flung border area.
The government said systems are in place to manage winter needs, with advance planning ensuring the supply of essentials, healthcare, and basic services during months of isolation.
On the demand for a tunnel, the department confirmed that repeated representations have been received from locals, adding that the proposal holds strong strategic and connectivity value.
The government said a tunnel linking Machil to the hinterland at Z-Gali has been sanctioned under the “Other than Capital Acquisition” head.
It added that preparation of the Detailed Project Report has been proposed for inclusion in the Annual Works Plan 2026-27.
The move signals intent to improve year-round connectivity in north Kashmir’s border belt, where road links often remain disrupted for months.
